Restructuring
What we do
Collinson Grant helps enterprises in the private and public sectors to achieve the right organisational structure. We analyse the costs of people and processes and match them to what the business needs to do. Our approach ensures that customers remain the focus of all activities and that operational and financial controls are improved. Managers and their staff are given better direction on what they need to do – and on the returns they might expect from enhanced performance.
The result is usually a slimmer organisation, with less but better motivated people, more efficient processes and substantially reduced costs.
Organisational design
Restructuring can quickly render organisational structures obsolete. With clients, we evaluate a range of options, including:
- flatter managerial structures - with wider spans of control
- functional or matrix reporting, with cross-site or cross-border responsibilities
- autonomous working groups, with fewer hierarchical controls
- service 'hubs', providing technical and administrative support
- outsourcing of peripheral activities to third parties.
Post-acquisition integration
Supporting acquisition and integration projects is a core part of our business. Key tasks include:
- clarifying managerial responsibilities
- putting appropriate governance in place
- communicating organisational changes to the employees
- rationalising product lines, operating locations and services
- selecting people for key roles
- managing redundancy programmes
- introducing new business processes or systems.
How we do it
Our approach is to work in small teams alongside a client’s own staff. We help them to collect, analyse and test data on inputs, processes and costs – using the results to develop a robust model of the organisation, which indicates how costs are related to outputs. The analysis generates options for a new structure, which are developed, costed and debated. When a consensus is achieved, a comprehensive plan is designed to get from A to B. We help managers to implement it. If employees – senior and more junior – are leaving, we can manage the whole programme of communication, consultation and redundancy.
Our experience
Collinson Grant has restructured large, well-known companies throughout the United Kingdom, in North America, and in mainland Europe. The starting point can be a new acquisition, integration of previously acquired businesses, substantial changes in a marketplace, or the need to reduce costs quickly in order to restore profitability. Whatever the circumstances, we agree on the priorities for action with senior managers and work with them to achieve targets. Our skills in employee relations and in negotiating directly with trades unions help us to implement organisational change with the minimum of disruption.
