Our work in employment law

Clients expect us to help them find a way through the legal minefield. But they do not want a technical, purist or 'off-the-shelf' perspective. We aim:

  • to reduce our clients’ financial exposure
  • to provide practical, business-focused solutions
  • to help clients to put their plans into effect
  • to improve performance through the promotion of good practice
  • to meet legal obligations without adversely affecting motivation or employee relations.
Our legal work is often done as part of an integrated operational or HR project. We also operate annual service contracts, with our nominated consultants building close, long-term relationships with clients. Our work includes:

Advice on managing people
We have been providing day-to-day advice to managers for many years. Our 'Line Manager’s Employment Law' booklet, updated annually, began in 1978.

Employment documentation
Professional and up-to-date employment documentation benefits employers and employees. We draft and revise:
  • contracts of employment
  • staff handbooks
  • policies, procedures and guidelines for managers.

Training
Managers need to understand the potential impact of employment law on their organisations. We regularly brief managers on changes to legislation and practical approaches to managing within the law.

Severance
Terminating employment can be a difficult and lengthy process, particularly when it involves senior managers. We negotiate severance and compromise agreements, seeking to resolve such matters amicably, cost-effectively and promptly.

Support on restructuring and acquisitions
A key aspect of our work is supporting acquisitions, mergers, plant closures, redundancy exercises and other major programmes of change. This could include due diligence, consulting with employees’ representatives, communication, selection, alternative employment and changing terms and conditions.

Employment tribunals

We handle many employment tribunals for clients. We are licensed, under the 'Bar DIRECT' scheme of the General Council of the Bar, to instruct counsel directly. However we handle most cases, including hearings, ourselves.
