Channel Four

Collinson Grant’s activities cover manufacturing, service and not-for-profit sectors (and extend from California to Warsaw). We have been working in the media - advertising, newspapers, television and radio - since the early 1990s.

Channel 4 was created by Act of Parliament in 1982 and has become one of the most admired media brands in the country. It has consolidated its position in an increasingly competitive market.

Our earlier work in restructuring a number of regional television companies led to an invitation to review operations at Channel 4. The broadcaster was having a difficult year: advertising revenue was disappointing, and staff members were too high. Costs had to be reduced quickly. We were initially authorised to review performance and costs in four departments: Finance, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Facilities Management. Managers wanted to benchmark the performance of Channel 4 against similar business organisations. The brief was later extended to include:

  • Commissioning
  • Business Affairs and Programme Finance
  • Marketing
  • Press and Publicity
  • Market Research

We worked with managers to examine opportunities to reduce costs, to identify options for improvements and to recommend changes. The team jointly identified substantial savings, which were quickly implemented.
